Goals and Times Related to the Kicking Game

  • Operation time for the PAT and field goal is 1.3 seconds or better. In high school, it comes out to about 1.4 seconds.  

  • Time for the punt is 2.1 or better for the punt to be completed. In high school, it may be 2.2 or 2.3, depending on the kicker. The snap time is 0.8 or better. It will be about 0.9 for high schools. The punter takes 1.3 to 1.4, to get the kick off based on the quality of your punter. 

  • Goals for the punt team — 40 yards net. Down the ball inside the 15-yard line. Hang time of 4.5 seconds or better. High schools – net 35 yards per punt. Down the ball inside 20-yard line. Hang time 4.0 seconds or better.  

  • Net 55 yards with kickoff team. Colleges kickoff from the 30-yard line – want to down the ball to the opponent’s 25-yard line. Want a 4.0 plus hang time on the kickoff.  For High School net 50 yards or better with kickoff team. High Schools kick from the 40-yard line – want to down the ball to the opponent’s 20-yard line. Want a hang time on the kickoff to be 3.5 plus.   

  • Kickoff-return team

     — return all kicks. Average starting point after the return to be on the 35-yard line. Maintain possession on all returns. Average starting point after the return to be on the 25-yard line for high schools.   

  • Goals for punt-return team — fielding all punts; average 10 yards on the returns — net of 130 yards per game. High School average of 10 yards on the returns with a net of 100 yards per game.
